Areas of Support
The Journalism Program funds a tightly focused portfolio of activities that support our mission, including educational programs, fellowships, monitoring, research, advocacy and training. Generally, these activities are targeted toward leaders and opinion leaders in journalism and seek to make substantial and enduring change. Areas of support include:
Content
We fund programs that ensure our citizenry has access to quality news content by providing resources to journalists and supporting new sources of quality journalism. For example:
- Training that helps strengthen the quality and depth of journalism
through Specialized Reporting Institutes and other initiatives
-
Conferences that provide the forum for leaders and reporters to
discuss key issues, ranging from national security to climate change.
- Journalism school partnerships that strengthen
organizational and educational training through university partners.
- Non-profit investigative journalism that
enhances quality coverage of issues through local and national initiatives.
Audience
We support activities that grow the audience that appreciates and understands news, while encouraging innovative ways of engaging underserved audiences. For example:
- Youth media programs that help young people
produce, understand and better appreciate the news process.
- Teacher training that increase news and media
literacy skills through scholastic journalism programs.
- Journalistic applications of digital tools and
technology that pave the way for audience engagement.
- New audience development that helps underserved
audiences better access, analyze and understand news and information.
Rights
We fund programs that promote the virtues of free press and support the legal rights of journalists. For example:
- First Amendment projects that promote the
importance of news media in a democratic society.
- Freedom of information work that helps the news
media and public access critical information.
- Transparency work that encourages government
openness and accountability.
- Protection of rights and legal defense for
journalists.
