CHICAGO, June 29, 2005
The McCormick Tribune Foundation board of directors approved several key leadership promotions at its recent meeting.
Lou Marsico has been promoted to the position of senior vice president of operations. Marsico joined the foundation as director of finance in 1987, and has served as vice president of finance and administration for the foundation since 1999. In addition to his involvement with the foundation, Marsico is chairman of the Donors Forum of Chicago’s board of directors, and serves as a member of the West DuPage Exchange Club and the DePaul University finance advisory board.
“Lou’s commitment to the foundation has been unwavering,” said Richard Behrenhausen, president and chief executive officer of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. “He has managed the finances of our four organizations capably, and has led standardization processes across the existing infrastructure yielding greater operating efficiency.”
A Chicago native, Marsico holds a bachelor’s of science in business management from Northeastern Illinois University and a master’s of business administration in finance from DePaul University. He is also a certified public accountant.
David Anderson has been named executive director of the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum. He will oversee the construction and content development for the museum, which will focus on America’s freedoms, with a special emphasis on First Amendment rights.
In his time at the foundation, Anderson managed the foundation’s highly successful Disaster Relief Fund. Launched after Sept. 11, 2001, the fund generated nearly $20 million for organizations that addressed the needs of the victims of terrorist attacks. He also spearheaded the foundation’s United Partners Campaign, which serves as an important fundraising tool for the foundation’s partners nationwide.
Anderson earned a bachelor of arts degree from Northern Illinois University and a juris doctorate from Loyola University in Chicago. He currently serves on the board of directors at BUILD, a non-profit organization that helps local at-risk youth avoid the dangers of gang involvement.
Paul Herbert has been promoted to the position of executive director of the Cantigny First Division Foundation in Wheaton, Ill. and will oversee the foundation, the First Division Museum and the McCormick Research Center. Herbert previously served as a senior strategist for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as a professor of military studies at National War College. He is a member of the American Historical Association, the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Society for Military History.
Herbert is a graduate of U.S. Army War College, and holds a bachelor of science degree from the United States Military Academy and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
About the McCormick Tribune Foundation
The McCormick Tribune Foundation is one of the nation’s largest charitable organizations, with combined assets of close to $1.5 billion. In 2004 the foundation approved the distribution of more than $109 million to invest in communities, address human needs and promote the ideals of a democratic society through innovative partnerships. The foundation, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2005, was first established as a charitable trust upon the death of Col. Robert R. McCormick, longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.
The foundation provides assistance in four program areas — communities, education, journalism and citizenship — and funds a special initiatives program. Through its grants, the foundation seeks to improve the social and economic environment; encourage a free and responsible discussion of issues affecting the nation; enhance the effectiveness of American education; and stimulate responsible citizenship.
