CHICAGO, Sept. 30, 2005

The McCormick Tribune Foundation board approved more than $6 million during the third quarter of 2005 to 41 charitable organizations throughout the nation as part of the foundation’s communities program.

“The McCormick Tribune Foundation’s communities program has evolved into a strategic philanthropic model that leverages partnerships with the nation’s leading newspapers, broadcast stations and sports teams to identify the needs of local areas,” said David L. Grange, president and chief executive officer. “This quarter McCormick Tribune Foundation has responded with significant grants to enhance the opportunities for children and families in at-risk environments.”

Targeting Chicago-area homelessness initiatives, the foundation provided a significant grant to Goodcity. This grant supports Chicago Continuum of Care’s Housing First plan and its effort to provide increased prevention services for those at risk of homelessness as well as housing and social services for homeless individuals and families.

The foundation also awarded substantial funding to the Chicago Public Education Fund for teacher-principal recruitment, training and certification to ensure quality education for Chicago’s children. These grants given locally reflect the foundation’s commitment to support communities in their efforts to build for their future.

Communities grants in Chicago included:
  • Chicago Public Education Fund ($200,000)
  • Clearbrook ($154,000)
  • Goodcity ($150,000)
  • YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago ($193,000)

About the McCormick Tribune Foundation

The McCormick Tribune Foundation is one of the nation’s largest charitable organizations, with combined assets of approximately $1.5 billion. In 2004, the foundation approved the distribution of more than $109 million to invest in children, communities and our country in an effort to strengthen our democratic society through innovative partnerships. The foundation, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2005, was established as a charitable trust upon the death of Col. Robert R. McCormick, longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. The foundation is an independent nonprofit, separate from Tribune Co., with substantial holdings in Tribune Co.

The foundation provides assistance in four program areas — communities, education, journalism and citizenship — and funds a special initiatives program. Through its grants, the foundation seeks to improve the social and economic environment; encourage a free and responsible discussion of issues affecting the nation; enhance the effectiveness of American education; and stimulate responsible citizenship.
