The Age of Lincoln
Presented by Orville Vernon Burton
Thursday, October 8
6 pm to 7:30 pm
McCormick Museum Gold Theatre
Burton will discuss The Age of Lincoln, a fiercely original history of the five decades that pivoted around Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Contrary to what many believe, Burton argues that Lincoln’s most enduring achievement was his attack on unfettered capitalism, not the 1865 Emancipation Proclamation.
A distinguished scholar at the University of Illinois since 1974, Burton is currently a professor of history and sociology and a senior research scientist and associate director of humanities and social sciences at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. He is the author or editor of 15 books and more than 100 articles.
